The Young Persons Mental Wellbeing Service is a confidential, non-judgemental and understanding service staffed by a specialist team. Over a series of up to eight one-to-one support sessions it offers recovery-focused techniques and tools to self-manage, helping young people to take control of their lives.
This tailored service can offer support with issues such as:
Working With Parents
For many young people, especially those still in the care of their families, home can play a crucial part in wellbeing and recovery.
Parents and carers are usually trying their very best and their involvement in their child’s support can improve outcomes and make home a better place to be. For this reason, our Young Person’s Service offers a 4-week Parent Group for any parents and carers that would like to improve their understanding of their young person’s anxieties, emotions, and behaviours.
The group offers tools and strategies on how to best support the young person through this difficult time and gives a space to share experiences with other parents.
Our Team
We spoke with our Young Person & Families Wellbeing Service Manager, Val McInroy, to find out more about the service and her experience working with young people.
Since it’s launch back in February 2022, how has it been working within the Young Person’s Service?
Within the first month of our initial launch, we were amazed to receive over three hundred referrals from young people. This clearly shows the need for support to young persons in our community.
In your experience, why do you think it’s important for young people to have access to mental health services like our Young Persons Service?
Previously mental health and well-being services were only offered to those aged 16 years and over. Since the pandemic increasingly young people are suffering with anxiety, stress and feeling isolated. We at FDAMH believe early intervention is the key to supporting all young people. Our service provides empathy, understanding and the opportunity, space, time, and confidentiality to talk openly about how they are feeling and offer them tools and strategies to enable them to self-manage.
What advice would you give to a young person who may be struggling with their mental health?
It is important to recognise the signs and triggers early and seek support as soon as possible. Seeking help is the first step towards getting and staying well. At FDAMH we offer support and encouragement for self-care and recovery with Mental Health and Wellbeing.
